The Benefits of Juicing - My Personal Experience
Are There Real Benefits To Juicing?
I know I am not the only one who has seen the infomercials of the fully white haired man with big bushy white eye brows advocating the benefits of juicing. Usually you see the presenter or host be in their 70′s radiating with health and they give the credit to the benefits of juicing. Even the late fitness guru Jack Lelanne came out with his power juicer and he was a pillar of health and fitness into his 90s. If you search on the internet you can find all sorts of information on the benefits of juicing. Heck there are full blown documentaries you can watch solely on the benefits of juicing. But is it just all hype with great advertising and marketing that is geared towards making money over actually helping people get healthy? Keep on reading to find out if the benefits of juicing are real…
My Take on The Benefits of Juicing
I have seen the infomercials, documentaries, read research, talked with others who juice and decided to give it a try over the last 60 days to see for myself the benefits of juicing. The reason for me giving juicing a try is simple, why the heck not? I like to try new things to see what works versus hyped up marketing and advertising (hello Shakeweight). From what I could find most online and in person is people do a juice fast (only having fresh juice from a juicer) for up to 60 days. They do this to help lose weight and detoxify their body. For me, I have no interest in losing weight, and I keep my system clean. So my approach was to juice up to two times daily times primarily with vegetables and limited fruit. My reasoning behind this was to not overload my insulin by having high glycemic juice. I even bought the Jack Lelanne juicer to hold me accountable to try this little experiment. Here is a link to the one I bought –> Jack Lalanne PJP Power Juicer Pro Stainless-Steel Electric Juicer
Here were the three main benefits of juicing I experienced:#1 - It clears you out. I keep my system pretty clean because the bulk of my diet is locally organic grown veggies, berries, seafood, and meat. The juicer cleared me out the first few days if you know what I mean. I was actually surprised by this but I felt great after.
#2 – Increase in energy. I noticed after the first few days that my energy levels increased (and stayed as I juiced). Its always good having more energy and I saw a bump in mine while juicing.
#3 – Improved Skin. My skin is fine, but it improved with juicing. It actually got smoother and clearer which I know for me wasn’t a huge focus but a great byproduct.
These were just three benefits of juicing that I experienced. There were other benefits of juicing, but these were the three main ones. So you may be wondering what ingredients I used and if it even tastes like juice or some horrible blend of liquid nastiness. I will get into that next…
Here is what I used
- carrots (these were the main staple)
- celery
- kale
- bok choy
- apples
- cucumber
- pineapple
- strawberries
- spinach
- beets
- ginger
- oranges
My main go to juice was carrots, apple, celery, bok choy, and cucumber. No matter what I blended it all tasted really good. There is a vast difference between store bought juice (which is essentially all sugar) and fresh juiced vegetables and fruits.
Why Am I Even Writing This Post About The Benefits of Juicing?
The reason I am writing this post about the benefits of juicing is that many people lack adequate intake of micro-nutrients (vitamin A,C, etc) phytonutrients, and minerals found in fruits and veggies. Some may argue that juicing can and does strip out the fiber from the fruits and veggies and a level of phytonutrients and they are right. However one of the benefits of juicing is you can use the pulp from the juicer that spits out. I use that on my salads so I don’t waste much of the remainder of the fruits and veggies.
Another reason I am writing about the benefits of juicing is because getting fit and healthy happens in balance. You can exercise until you are blue in the face and eat like crap and never get anywhere. However if you leverage fitness with sound nutrition you are going to get far better lasting results. This blog is heavy on fitness on purpose, but every now and again I need to harp on nutrition.
Closing Thoughts on The Benefits of Juicing
Nothing happens in isolation that produces results. Rather multiple things becoming interdependent is how lasting results appear. There are many articles that show other benefits of juicing and if you ever thought about juicing then I suggest you read them. If you are wondering if I am still juicing, the answer is yes. The benefits of juicing from my personal experience is worth continuing, plus I bought the juicer so I might as well use it.
